The Shelby Daytona Cobra, built for Le Mans 24-hour sportscar speed. An outgrowth of the Ford Shelby Cobra that revolutionized USA and world sportscar racing from 1962 to 1967, the Shelby Daytona Cobra was at first a “behind the garage” experimental. Its initial purpose was specific: to defeat the then-dominant Ferrari factory racing sportscars at the Le Mans 24-hour. Carroll Shelby and his team realized that to accomplish this he needed a car that would reach 200 mph on the Le Mans Mulsanne straightaway. The original Shelby Cobra sportscar, although incredibly fast, was not aerodynamic enough to crack the 200 mph barrier. Young auto designer Pete Brock, submitted a design to Shelby that he believed could achieve this goal.  In the space of 90 days the prototype was built, and with the brave driver-testing mastery of veteran Ken Miles, the Daytona Cobra won the GT III class at the 1964 Le Mans 24-hour, with an official top speed of 199 mph!
